Introduction to Microchipping
In the early 1990's, Messrs Kennedy & Co were commissioned to undertake the introduction of an electronic tagging (chipping) system of companion animals, also known as Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). It was the first step towards the creation of a national database for lost or stolen animals and in preparation for a new Pet Passport Scheme which was established in 2000. For the first time, pets could carry a small implantable pet ID glass cylindrical device (microchip) in the fatty tissue immediately under the skin, between the shoulder blades.
Why have your pet microchipped?
How would you feel if you and your pet became separated, or it became lost or stolen? If your pet has been micro-chipped you can feel secure in knowing your pet carries ID. The minute microchip carries a 15 digit number that will be dedicated to you and your pet . When your pet is microchipped details of you, your address and your dog will be logged on the Petlog National Database. This unique number can be matched to you by searching the National Re-unification Database (Petlog). Petlog is run by the UK Kennel Club and has a 24/7 helpline telephone number: 0870 6066 751. It is important that you keep Petlog informed if you move.

The micro-chip is approximately the size of a large grain of rice. Not only are microchips particularly efficient in the return of lost pets but are also of assistance in any ownership disputes.

Pet Passports
As part of the qualifying criteria for a Pet Passport, pets must be microchipped. Pet dogs and cats that are resident in either the United Kingdom or another qualifying country can enter or re-enter the UK without quarantine provided they meet the rules of PETS: Pet Travel Scheme ~ see the Defra website for details.
Paris Grooming
In 1996 a revised and final version of the microchipping ISO (International Standard) 11784/5 for companion was devised. DEFRA oversees the Standard for the UK
Paris Grooming has an Appropriately Trained Implanter and uses ISO compliant microchips meeting specifications 11784/5 which can be read in the UK and Europe. For a one off fee of £20 a microchip implant (an identifying integrated circuit) is placed under the skin of your dog between its shoulder
blades.
